How to stop wasting your Google Ads budget
Running ads is easy; reaching the right person is not. The most common mistakes on small budgets and how to avoid them.
01Define the goal up front
The question to answer before you start is this: if this campaign succeeds, what will have happened? Will the phone ring, a form arrive, an order come in? Campaigns without a clear goal boast about clicks while leaving their contribution to the business unclear. The thing to measure is not the click but the work it brought in.
02Filter out the wrong searches early
On a small budget the fastest way to lose money is showing ads on irrelevant searches. Adding terms that look related to your sector but never convert to a negative list saves real money in the first week. That list is not written once and forgotten; read the search terms report regularly and keep extending it.
03The ad and the landing page must say the same thing
Making a promise in an ad and then dropping the visitor on a generic home page is the quiet mistake that drains budgets. Whatever service the ad mentions, the person clicking should land directly on that service's page. A visitor who doesn't see what they came for leaves, and you have already paid for that click.
04Tighten the geography
For a business serving one area, advertising nationwide means spending on people you cannot serve. Define your service area realistically. Appearing repeatedly in a small area brings far more work than appearing once across a large one.
05Be patient, but don't look away
Campaigns improve as data accumulates; changing settings daily undermines that learning. Then again, not looking for weeks means losing track of where the money goes. Reviewing search terms and conversions once a week is the right rhythm for most small businesses.
