How to choose an e-commerce platform

Off-the-shelf or custom build? The decision should follow where you will be in two years, not where you are today.

01Define what you sell first

A boutique with ten products and a wholesaler with thousands of variants do not have the same needs. Product count, variant structure, stock tracking and shipping rules are the criteria that actually decide the platform. How the admin panel looks and how many themes exist come much later.

02The real advantage of ready platforms is speed

With an off-the-shelf platform you can be selling within weeks; payments, shipping and security arrive ready-made and the maintenance burden is not yours. In return you can customise only as far as the platform allows. For most businesses that limit is not a problem for a long time — but it is worth planning for the day it becomes one.

03When a custom build makes sense

If you have a non-standard order flow, deep integration with your own ERP or an unusual pricing model, ready platforms will keep getting in the way. Custom development then starts more expensive but ends up cheaper. The test is not cost but whether your business model is standard.

04Ask about the exit cost now

The question rarely asked and most expensive to ignore is this: if I want to leave, how do I take my data? Can products, customers and order history be exported? A choice made without that answer constrains every later decision.

05Calculate the total cost

The monthly plan is the visible part of the iceberg. Transaction fees, extra app subscriptions, theme work and integrations can change the picture entirely. Compare on total annual cost of ownership, not on the headline monthly price.
